A Midsummernightsdream - music by Felix Mendelssohn Mendelssohn and Henry Purcell
on a story by William Shakespeare
 

Who doesn’t know the 'Wedding March’ by Felix Mendelssohn or the 'Frost Dance’ by Henry Purcell! Both are based on Shakespeare’s beloved and often played ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream. Eva in turn is inspired by the location that once was the decorum for Visconti’s film ‘Vaghe stelle dell’orsa’ (Golden Lion, Film Festival Venice, 1965, met Claudia Cardinale). She directs her version of a musical Midsummer Night’s Dream in the fairytale gardens of Villa Palagione. We will be easily seduced by the enchanting mezzo soprano Renate and we don’t need any magic drops in our eyes to fall in love with Marina’s art of singing. But the young lovers Pawel and Wojtek are easily manipulated by the magic drops of the elderly couple to fall in love with the wrong lady.

Like last year with ‘Strike the violins’ Ralph will urge the orchestra to go wild. For sure Visconti would have ended his film in major if he had heard Maarten under a clear starry sky; so much warmth and passion gives you delicious chills. It will be exciting to witness how he will make the vocal switch to Beethovens’s ‘Mädchen’ in the Pinacoteca later in the festivalweek.
Shakespeare’s play about love entanglements and troubles proves to be of all times. As is the entertainment of the old manipulating the young, from their envy of youth and its vitality.

Everyday Frank plays the stars of heaven in the Radio Philharmonisch, just like Lis and Richard did and René does in the Phion. These virtuosi are now performing in the Palazzo Ricciarelli, that has a history as rich and incredible as the life of Mozart. The composer, on his way to Florence, must have stayed overnight not far from here. The ‘Abendlied’ (Evening Song) by Schumann is just right for these great musicians. Traffic came to a standstill last year in the streets of Volterra, because the windows were open during the concert. This year we fear for a complete traffic jam!

They all played the violin, Schubert, David, Vivaldi and even Part can deliver some strokes on it. But this time no solo violin sparkles in the open air at Villa Vitti where we hope to welcome the moon above Volterra at the end of the concert. Instead the violins are part of Schubert’s Synphony, or accompany the two fagots in a wild concert by Vivaldi with Jos and Frans, to then sound a bit surprised in the works for trombone. Because the violin on which you can cry, laugh and can produce the most beautiful and ugliest sounds is now silenced by the trombone when played by Jörgen. The virtuosity of David and the heavenly sounds of Part, they touch your soul. It will probably get a little bit more quiet at Giuseppe’s in the heart of borgo Mazzolla.

Did Mozart travel past here with Allegri’s ‘Miserere’ from the Sixtine Chapel in his pocket? Did Boccherini really see the light of day only 73 kilometers away from here? And how many incredibly beautiful Stabat Maters do we know, Siena, Florence, Pisa, Volterra?/ You are short of ears for this Stabat Mater. To be honest: Renate, Quirine, Marjolein, Alicia and Judith are no saints, but how heavenly do they sound together in this miraculous and surprising work of this Tuscan master.

More mundane then Beethoven you can hardly be. I think that he would have had a great time here. The wines, the food, the climate - things that were all crucial to him. With his last words ‘a pity, too late’ he referred to a box of great wine just delivered at his house. Did this on portraits always gruff and angry looking man have no sense of humor? And as a great lover of wine, was he completely devoid of belcanto qualities? Or did he have an ounce of the humor of Mozart? The singers Marina, Pawel, Maarten and Wojtek, so much in love under the stars in the garden of Villa Palagione now are singing about more earthly things like concerns about their mother, shoelaces and happy days.
